Trails Update: April 19, 2024
Hello Friends!
I’ve missed you guys. The biking was so good in February that I started considering inviting you all on a Valentine’s dig date! … but then winter arrived and we all forgot about bikes for a couple of weeks. We finally got to that “date” last week, when a solid crew of devoted diggers picked up where we had left off last fall. Trails Director Ben brought all flavours of sugar, including a daring selection of jelly bellies. Work on Flashback has been our main focus of volunteer efforts for 4 seasons now and WORCA is starting to plan for a ribbon cutting party. We’re down to the last kilometre of blank trail and we will devote every trail night to completing this epic intermediate loop (Far Out-Flashback). Let’s dig together this spring! Sign up HERE!
What Else?
This winter’s atmospheric rivers revealed any and every possible spring in the valley. We’re inspecting and patching up water damage/managing new sources of flow. We had a few surprises along Far Out/Flashback where water was coming in from unexpected spots. We cleared and extended some ditches, scrapped excessive mud, made sure the tread was outsloped and built some french drains for streams to flow under the trail. Mosquitoes “supervised” the work (they kept us moving).
If There’s Snow, Please Don’t Go.
Many of us are keen to shred without driving to Squamish or Pemberton but please keep in mind that melting snow = saturated soil = tread erosion and damage. As a rule of thumb, we should wait until the snow on the access trail has melted before shredding. This extra care should be taken with regards to smooth dirt surface trails like Flashback, Chipmunk Rebellion and Heavy Flow…
See you all back on the trails!
