Trails Update: May 3, 2024
Clean up
“Are you guys building a bike trail?” Uh, this was a bike trail before that suspension bridge was installed… It was time to “try” managing the bike route through the trainwreck site. The original riding line has “disappeared” (along with all of the underbrush and moss) due to the heavy foot traffic now drawn to this tourist attraction. We upgraded the higher ground path behind the first rail car that should prove to be more favorable for bikes and designer shoes. We scraped A LOT of black organic muck before elevating/recapping the trail and blocked some of the many braids throughout the area. Finally, we added decking and improved the ramp onto the last bridge where the bike trail re-enters the dense forest. This work should help make the south whistler XC loop to the Beaver am (Runaway train) more enjoyable.
Come hail or high water
(I think) There’s an expression that Grade 12 students live by: Dress for the weather you want. This proved foolish in the face of chilling wind and hail for some of our t-shirt/shorts clad volunteer diggers… Once again, Mr. Kung’s Outdoor Leadership Program students have joined the trail crew for some dirty “phys.ed”. This year’s classroom is Creamsicle Rainbow. One half of this trail was impacted by last summer’s fire thinning while the rest of it lies on private property (as do the bottoms of White Knuckles and Anal Intruder). An opportunity/need for network redesign presented itself, so we’re rebuilding Creamsicle as a 2-way trail that will stay out of the private land parcel and provide access/egress to the no-flow zone. This is a large project that will recruit WORCA volunteers on dig nights once we’ve completed the Flashback trail… Speaking of which, more progress was made through increasingly rocky terrain last week. Thanks to OG Flashback visionaries Todd and Seb for joining the dig crew! Big berms coming soon! Sign up here to join us this Tuesday …Remember to dress for the weather (and mosquitoes).
See you on the trails!
