Trails Update: October 4, 2024

Crew’s choice!

We’ve spent most of this season building and renovating lower elevation trails with a heavy focus on network blue-ification (where appropriate). Flashback, Shit Creek, River Runs Through It, Danimal North…, these were all fun projects, but when I listed off a few of the Items left on this season’s work plans, the crew was more enthusiastic for the spiciest (commute) project: Gargamel! We try to make sure that our work satisfies a variety of Whistler riders and this week’s efforts were for us. Our crew can shred! In the previous week, I had ridden the Tyler Morland classic in my “remix” of the 2004 Samurai of singletrack. The trail has (D)evolved a fair bit since The Collective outed the Whistler test piece. With rain in the forecast, I opted for us to work on the rockier (as opposed to rootier) bottom half. We armored countless holes. We’ll pay close attention to the snow line before moving further up… Amending the log ride near the start may have to wait until next spring.

meet frank

My brother (Frank) was visiting this week. Of course I took him to experience sea-to-sky highlights like flying over Howe sound, hugging an ancient Cedar and riding Flashback. We also ate and drank like kings, sampling some amazing shoulder season fine dining. Frank loved it all but he was curious to see what my “normal day to day life” is like… so I took my brother to work! Frank joined us for Tuesday Dig Night (last week was sponsored by EVO). We were putting some finishing touches on the redesigned Creamsicle Rainbow trail. The No Flow zone blessed us with countless wheelbarrows of unexpectedly PRIME dirt to cap rockwork projects that were laid down last spring. Frank dug like a champ so we rewarded him with Sarah’s deluxe pulled pork hoagies paired with Coast Mountain Brewing’s freshest IPAs. He exclaimed: “You actually do gourmet everyday!”

We managed to work our way down the top half of the trail and will give it a final push to the bottom on October 8th: The LAST Tuesday Trail Night of the Season. Chromag is hosting! BONUS: Ben will liquidate all of the leftover candy (and sausages)!!! Sign up here!

is it edible? (friendly Plug)

The last few weeks in the woods have been a real feast for the eyes (and belly)! Last autumn’s drought made for comfortable rides, canceled trail nights and a literal bust for fungus. Our return to cool, wet weather has super charged the forest with weird and wonderful surprises. Contrary to popular belief (potentially due to the photos I share): I’m NOT a mushroom expert. There are actual mushroom experts (Mycologists!) coming to Whistler! You can join these experts for informative seminars and field trips at the Whistler Naturalists’ Fungus Among Us Festival.

See you on the trails!
