tim’s in charge
Volunteer trail events are back! Last Sunday, we ventured way north to the wedge zone: to rehabilitate High Hopes. The trail name follows the theme of Pink Floyd song titles in the area (Comfortably Numb, Happiest Days, Young Lust...). The Cheakamus Community Forest is performing fire-thinning work (ongoing) around the Wedge Woods development and so, they wanted to sponsor a trail day to spruce up affected trails. Having the trail’s builder (Tim Haggerty) lead the project was a refreshing change of pace for me: I also got to dive in and dig cause “Tim’s the boss today!” We refurbished buried sections and added a ride-around. Enhanced some rockwork and pulled stumps. Please hold your enthusiasm to ride the fresh work: The trail is still closed until forestry operations are complete including operation of heavy machinery and pile burning when conditions are right. Check trailforks before your ride or go try out a different Pink Floyd trail…
And, done.
As much as I love to surprise event participants with fresh trail work, there’s even more satisfaction in actually finishing a project. We had left our tools in Danimal North while we spruced up Danimal South for the Witsend Enduro. Modernizing the bumpy straight-away was nagging at me, so this week we returned with gusto. We needed to pull the line out of the guts (low spot) of the old road bed, where water flows during downpours. My snowboarding senses were tingling when we planned for this redesign… the terrain features inviting natural “walls” on either side of the original screamed “Let’s try to make this little valley feel like riding a halfpipe!” We took great care to leave some rocks and roots, so the currently smooth line should develop that classic Danimal old-school bumpy character. Sadly there is no rope-tow for this pipe…You’ll need to head back up Scotia Nova for another run!
See you on the trails!
