Trails Update: Apr 23, 2021

Busy Beavers

We’re back! Benoit, Renee, Liam and I (Dan) hit the tools after almost 6 months and it felt… like riding a bike! Thanks to a blast of April sunshine, we jumped right into it. You can imagine we’re a little shocked by the 5 am alarm, -2c mornings AND  mosquitoes. We planned our work around the snowmelt, so, starting in the south end of town made sense. While touching up (last season's) new exit for Runaway Train, we noticed a big change in the adjacent water course… the local beavers have been busy! Castor Canadensis is known to be a master landscape engineer and our regular lunch spot in this zone served front row seating to a main event. Since last spring, they’ve chomped down huge trees, built a sizable dam and flooded an area roughly the size of a soccer field. It also looks like a new lodge is currently under construction.

What an inspiration to engineer something of impact. After giving Runaway Train the finishing touches it deserved, we set our sights on modernizing End of the Line. We refreshed some bridges, replaced wood with rock and repaired a major washout. We’re still going to be working in this area next week so you’ll need to hold your breath like a beaver before getting the full “new trail work” experience.

Trail nights are back!

We’re excited to get you digging. Tuesdays night starting in the Lower Sproatt zone. With COVID escalating, we’re also escalating distancing protocols and limiting participation to 10 volunteers per week. You’ll need to sign up here.

Trail CLOSED!

A friendly reminder that a few areas are currently closed for your safety and that of the site workers. Check Trailforks for the latest status updates.

-AM/PM is closed until the fire thinning work in the area is complete.

-Nester’s hill -the Cut Yer Bars area-, is (likely) closed for the entire summer. See the full list of trails affected here (quick answer: it’s all of them)

-Lord of the squirrels is still closed... due to snow.

See you on the trails!
