Trails Update: August 12, 2022

Back at it!

After a well deserved vacation, the trail crew was refreshed and ready to take on modernizing Tunnel Vision. We started with basic fixes like filling puddles and that escalated quickly to re-routing the trail out of the devil’s club lined old road bed. This will be a multi-week project so you can keep riding laps of Lord of the Squirrels for a while before coming over to see any major changes…

Area 56

Crankworx is back and with it came the return of the Freehub Magazine/Specialized Soil Searching trail day. We led this motivated crew to Area 56 behind the public works yard. Riders familiar with Nester’s hill know about the glacier that blocks access to the trail every spring! The Public works yard snow clearing pile impacts the trail well into June. The volunteers dug a better climbing two-way reroute which will get away from the snow and allow access to the trail earlier in the season… also of note the Free Radicals got to build a berm! Finishing work in the upper merge will take place this week.

Flashback

There was even more Crankworx action on the volunteer trail building front: Rocky Mountain hosted a trail day for the Ride Like A Girl program. Mentors and athletes rode up to Flashback, to learn what goes into building fresh trails. Most of the women already had plenty of digging experience so they blasted the trail through dust and mosquitoes… “The bugs only get me when I’m chatting!” announced Karin. They rode down after testing the freshest work, returning to the village for races and the chaos of Crankworx. We’ll need a fair bit of rain before any of the freshly built bits of Flashback are ready for shredding. I can’t wait!

See you on the trails!
