Trails Update: May 22, 2020

Chipmunk (part 2) ready to go!

Letting tires sample the Chipmunk Rebellion last fall exposed more of its texture… and moisture. Well rested from an atypical May long weekend, we spent the short work week bridging two wide spots before they became problematic. The (long!) boardwalks really help with the flow of the trail. Some roots and holes also got armoured making the trail fit for a ribbon cutting (part 1 to be constructed soon...). I challenge you to ride it all without a pedal stroke!

Volunteer Shout outs:

Big thanks to Tony Moore for completing his “move to higher ground” project in the swamp zone of North Secret. His quality work will outlast any bridge. This project has been on the to-do list since 2002!

Rake and report gold stars also go out to: Andrew Strain for the clean-up of Comfortably Numb from North Secret to Jeff’s and Young Lust.

Uschi Scherer for a complete buffing of Delineator… using only this!

Trail crew member Patrick Plante for “volunt-working” through the weekend on his creation: Working Class

Anyone else keen? Industrial Waste could use a sweep...

Tool Squirrel

Did you know that squirrels spend most of their time stashing food? One summer, our backyard resident undermined one of my garden pots with hundreds of cones! They hide nuts and cones in so many locations that many are forgotten… until they grow into trees.

I also get great satisfaction from spring raking. I try to get to my trails before tires can access them. Recently, I pushed my bike up <name withheld> with a rake in hand and looked for a safe spot to conceal my ride. “Oh yes, just up here should be a great place to stash a… !!!  my tools!”  Undiscovered for several years, it was a good stash indeed!

That’s not the first time that I (re)discover a tool stash… I now keep a list of “what is where” in my phone. I just need to figure out what I meant exactly by: “...halfway down, behind a tree”.

See you on the trails! (2m apart)
