Trails Update: May 8, 2019

The night before Tuesday

'Twas the night before Tuesday, when all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

The flagging was laid in the forest with care,

In hopes that keen diggers would soon be there…

I lose sleep over this. Seriously. For the first few trail nights, I’m like a child on the night before christmas: Filled with unrelenting anticipation. Will anyone show up? Did I flag enough work if hundreds show? Who’ll build up that rockwall? Will there be IPAs? Where will we find that sweet orange dirt? Will people be able to find the meeting spot? Will this trail get ridden?...

The answer is always YES and I did eventually find sleep.

38 diggers showed up and battled rock fields and duff. Origin brought their crew and a BBQ (and IPAs!) to help rough-in roughly 200 metres of road-bypassing trail!

They reached for a tool and I showed them the trail,

And away they toiled moving duff by the pail.

The path taking shape ‘till we ran out of light,

Happy burgers to all! This is TUESDAY DIG NIGHT!

Let’s do that again next week! We’ll continue the Yummy Numby road bypass on May 14. The folks from We Run Whistler and Comfortably Numb Running Race will be hosting. Meet us at the lower Yummy Numby trailhead at 5:30 for a few hours of exercise…

Please hike/ride in as the closest parking is on Painted Cliff Road (or Base 2).

Light touch

Repairing well loved and popular trails is fun and challenging. As a trail ages, tires and weather expose roots or create holes, typically making it more technically challenging. We try to keep to the character of the original trail, restoring its younger form and hopefully, most riders will only notice our work by its smell (fresh cedar). This week we replaced a bridge and armoured sections on Foreplay. We ventured into Bush Doctor to close down an unsustainable (very new) line and armour some slab exits. Finally, raking and some rockwork to smooth out Green Jello.

Stay updated on the latest (and keep posting what you find) with trailforks.

See you on the trails!
