Golden Gate Analogy
“They” say that it takes 7 years to paint the Golden Gate bridge. Starting in San-Francisco, by the time the crews reach the Marin headlands, it’s time to start again.
That’s not really how it works: the crews do a lot of back and forth with touch-ups and other repairs.The trail crew’s task list is a little bit like that. By the time we get done at one end of the valley, the to-do list has filled up with projects at the other end. We don’t usually need to repair anything again, but other issues turn up over time.
Lord of the Squirrels is a golden gate bridge of its own. In the spring, we had worked our way up, repairing issues close to the alpine lake… and now we’ve begun another round of touch ups, working from the flank trail once again. There’s definitely a feeling of deja-vu. Inspecting previous work and tackling the new problems. The trail still fascinates me. So does getting reacquainted with the resident squirrels, woodpeckers and ravens.
Next season, we are planning to add several bridges to keep tires out of wet spots and improve flow through some of the up and down bits.
Then the trail will really be done… winky face.
