Trails Update: August 11th, 2023

Back in my old hood’

The trail crew has spent a lot of time in the south end of town this season due to the Flashback Adaptive Mountain Bike project. During last week’s fire-thinning remediations near Rainbow Estates, residents were delighted to see us in their “backyard”. They encouraged me to revisit my north of town to-do list… “Oh yeah, those bridges on Comfortably Numb!”

The 7 little bridges that lead towards Young Lust and the Al Grey bridge needed replacing. I’m pretty sure those were built soon after the 2003 floods. Proximity to the forest service road meant we could roll in all the decking previously split at the yard during extreme hazard wildfire work restrictions. Plus, we got to try out some U2 fasteners… this really sped-up the assembly!

While up north, we also got the brush cutters out to trim Kill Me Thrill Me (KMTM) and North of Town. “Short Michal” cleared a huge cedar which provided the materials for bridge repairs on North Of Town while “Tall Michal” took care of a broken bridge on KMTM. That bridge (on the easier optional line) was replaced with an armored-rock transition. Also trimmed: Nester’s hill. Also rocked: the drops on ESP.

Re-visit Delineator

The Lil’wat Forestry Ventures crew has completed the fire-thinning work along the Delineator trail and I’d like to thank them for their really thorough clean up! The trail is open now and I encourage riders to go check out the bypass built by the Whistler Secondary School Outdoor Leadership Program students this past June.

Oh!, and, everywhere in town: Mind the Wasps! Be weary when riding by rotten stumps or freshly excavated holes. Bears that attack a Wasp’s nest are only trying to eat the eggs and larvae, so there are usually angry adult stingers around…

See you on the trails!
