Trails Update: June 16, 2023
Whistler Secondary School X Delineator
I love to get a project off of my to-do list, so it was a pleasure to hear that Mr. Kung’s Outdoor Leadership Program students would return to Delineator for an extra “credit”. It was a literal trail factory that benched through deep duff at one end of the bypass and tackled gnarly steep side-slope at the other. All of the material from the steep part got moved to the rest of the trail laying out a smooth ribbon of dirt.
Big Rock Rob
Rob Mullen made another week-long guest appearance volunteering with the trailcrew! His visit coincided with the return of the 2 Michals who’d been testing trails in Slovakia. We first refreshed their rockwork in the finishing touches of the Delineator bypass. What remained was a complex system of huge roots that needed protecting. As usual, Rob started the project with a behemoth stone… Delineator is still closed due to fire thinning operations so you’ll need to wait a while before testing out this new bypass. More rain will help it bed in too!
Great Decking!
Tim Regan from Vision Pacific has been volunteering at Tuesday Dig Nights for a few years now and wanted to step up his contribution to the project. He tasked his crew to mill some cedar decking boards for the bridges on Far Out and Flashback!
You might be asking: “Hey Dan, why didn’t your crew just split some decking yourselves?”
The adaptive-MTB standard for bridges on a blue trail calls for a minimum 5 foot width. Splitting decking becomes more difficult (and wasteful) as the decking’s length increases due to knots and twists in the logs. Milling the wood keeps things in line through the natural “imperfections” of the source tree. We’re grateful for the delivery too, allowing the crew to continue spending time on network maintenance and prepping sites for volunteer trail events. Speaking of which, we got busy with Rob’s favorite tool: the Tirfor. We pulled stumps and boulders for Flashback’s trail tread to reach the 4 foot wide adaptive trail standard.
See you on the trails!
