Trails Update: June 23, 2023

Hello old friend.

“How do you feel?”

“Uh. Physically good but,… Change is hard.”

A Rockwork Orange is the first trail I’ve built. In 2010, It became my new obsessive outlet after retiring from competitive snowboarding. I spent 2 summers exploring the landscape, precisely cutting moss and scrubbing slabs clean, becoming familiar with every tree, rock and squirrel in the area while crafting the experience. It was my debut album, I wanted it to be perfect! It even took me 4 years to make the sign. No other trail feels quite so precious to me. I still ride it a lot mostly to (re)test my skills but the views are also nice. Over the years I’ve noticed every bit of wear and tear: tire tracks on the moss, newly exposed roots, displaced rocks and even CUT TREES! …I miss the pristine strip of granite that would guide your front wheel through the impossibly tight turns and off-camber slabs. While some of the trail has gotten more battered and challenging, I feel attached to the matured quirky difficulty of the trail.

Last fall I started telling friends that a “remix” was coming to the (Rockwork>Korova>Wizard) trilogy... I was trying to lock-in my commitment to this renovation. Changes are happening over the next few weeks. We’ve already repaired ramps and slab exits plus changed the line through climbing sections of A Rockwork Orange. The bridge over the gulley was my original dream design but in 2010, I didn’t have the skill (or a chainsaw) to pull it off. We’re working into Korova Milk Bar now.

Rain Dance

Tuesday dig nights returned to the regularly scheduled programming thanks to the welcome Juneuary weather. The catering crew served hot bowls of chili and McCoo’s brought even hotter swag giveaways. Progress on this week’s project (Flashback 4) has reached the next creek crossing which feels like a perfect point to pause this section. Next week we’re heading back up to Flashback 1 to get more unfinished business off of our to-do list. My fingers are crossed for the weather to cooperate…

See you on the trails!
