Trails Update: November 11th, 2023

Shutting Down the Green Office

As the snow line creeps down, what’s left of the WORCA trail crew is creeping up Industrial Waste and Chipmunk Rebellion! The 2 Michals are taking advantage of fair weather and tacky soil conditions to make up for this summer’s frustrating drought…repairing this popular Westside lap kept getting pushed back. Desperate for rain, the Chipmunk’s smooth tread had been literally blown away and some brake ruts were getting outta hand. Riders won’t recognize the intersection with Pure Vida which got the full rock tetris treatment. Drains were improved and puddle spots were fixed. Berms got patches and (hopefully) the weight of a deep white blanket of snow will pack our fresh work so that these trails roll like new next spring.

Michal and Michal are the last members standing since everyone else is enjoying some down (or up?) time before the switch to our winter offices. Can anyone guess where I’m typing from? (see this week’s photos for clues).

And so concludes another stellar season of playing “Fix, That, Trail!”. I want to extend a special thanks to our Leadhands (the Michals) for generally holding down the fort, leading and teaching our crew. Your teamwork, patience and out of the box thinking have elevated everyone’s experience on the trail crew this year. I’m so proud of all the projects we tackled this year including (but not limited to) repairs of brush cutter destruction under power lines; re-routing sections of trail damaged by fire thinning operations; replacinging countless expired wooden features in A River Runs Through It (…it was 9); renovating the Rockwork>Korova>Wizard trilogy; SALTED CARAMEL! And, of course the massive progress on Flashback including upgrading the upper-most loop to Adaptive-mtb blue standard.

We couldn’t have done any of this without Trevor, Nicole and Ben’s leadership, persistent advocacy by the WORCA Board of Directors, funding from the RMOW, plus, the many donors and sponsors, volunteer diggers! and of course, all of our members. There’s literally strength in numbers… Please consider gifting a WORCA membership to a trail user on your “good” list this holiday season (What a plug! haha). Join us!

I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish next year!

See you in the snow!
