Trails Update: October 6, 2022

Some moisture please!

We’re about to shift to later morning starts given how dark it is at 7am these days. Spectacular sunrises are a nice treat though. Having completed the new Dessert Platter bridges, we got rocking on the transitions and made progress de-duffing the rest of the newest bypass. It’s not rideable yet though… The tread needs some dampness before we can shape it. Sadly, the forecast isn’t cooperating. I usually get excited about riding in the snow for the bike park’s final weekend… looks like all we’re getting is more dust (sad face). Will there be any mushrooms to scope at this year’s Fungus Among Us Festival!?!

Kill shot!

Scott was just getting started bench cutting a section of trail, he took a few swings of his Pulaski before realizing: Wasps! We’re normally done worrying about those guys by October. Somehow no one got stung as the bugs swarmed the tool. We left the Pulaski in place (in the nest) for a few days to let the insect tempers cool. I suspect that Scott struck the Queen since activity around the site has strangely calmed down…

Look: Squirrels!

The piles of deconstructed pine cones and countless holes in the ground made it obvious that we’d entered American Red Squirrel country. Indeed, there’s been tons of action: shrill sounds, cone drops, chases and bold approaches (to humans). I spotted a few of them digging holes, either to find food, or stash it. Did I mention the chases? This is part of their mating ritual. Love is definitely in the air!

See you on the trails!
