Trails Update: October 26th, 2023
Before the ground freezes!
I spent last weekend at the WORCA Board of Director’s annual retreat. Between program reviews and planning discussions, we sampled trails on Eagle and Burke mountains in Coquitlam. The eerie fog made the forest so dark! This reminded me that the seasonal switch was imminent. I joined the trail crew on Monday as we returned to Far Out 3 with haste in our step: Winter is coming! You know how I love to finish a project, so we went full gas with the Adaptive-MTB blue rating upgrades. We pulled some stumps and benched through rotten logs. I wrestled with an “iceberg” rock as well… Everywhere we worked, we made huge craters in the trail. Filling those holes was easy and had a serendipitous side effect: We got to clean up all of the rocks piled along the trail during the original construction. On Tuesday, we prepared for cold rain but settled for snow all afternoon. The end was in sight and after a night time low of -5c, we completed Phase 1 of our Adaptive-MTB blue project. Huge thanks go out to Craig Mackenzie, who concocted this great inclusive initiative and “put his muscle where his mouth is” - digging away at this section of trail all summer!
“Oh Yeah!”
Quoting Kool-Aid Man, our week only got better: Forecast Coffee hosted our annual staff party, featuring Whistler’s finest crispy chicken sandwich and an outstanding selection of potent potables! And… The Scandinave Whistler treated us to a day of soothing hydrotherapy in their relaxing baths! Well deserved perks for our hard working trail crew. We’re now refreshed and we’ll keep digging until the snow drops!
See you on the trails!
