Trails Update: October 5th, 2023
Heading back to the trilogy
We’ve received many kudos for the work we did earlier this year on A Rockwork Orange and Korova Milk Bar. “Why didn’t you also fix the Wizard Burial Ground?” was often the follow up. Lack of moisture. This summer's drought had left us in a waiting pattern to continue working our way down the steep chutes of the Wizard. While our senior staff were taking chainsaw training at Arbor Canada, the rest of us returned to continue modernizing efforts on one of my first creations. We shaped some lips and redesigned turns along the janky traverse to help carry speed to where the steep fun begins. There’s more to come in the coming weeks…
Tuesday Dig Nights!
We had great weather and even greater chili at last week’s penultimate trail night. Many diggers made their way to Flashback 5 as soon as 4:30 to get some prime daylight digging. The duff was deep as we fought our way through rotten logs leftover from 1969 logging operations. “How do you know that specifically?” …I read the sign. We’re building Flashback through the Interpretive Forest and if you look carefully, every 100 metres or so, yellow signs explain various replanting and fertilizing parameters used along the Cheakamus Forest Service Road. Speaking of Forest management, this week’s trail night sponsor was the Cheakamus Community Forest. WORCA has been drafting a new memorandum of understanding with the CCF to help both organizations in planning and management of these shared community assets (trails and forests). Join us on October 10 for the last trail night of the season. Chromag are supporting the event and a ribbon cutting is likely for the short bottom section of Flashback! Please sign up here to join us.
Wood deliveries!
While we were building the exit bridge for Flashback 5, we received beautiful decking prepared by Shape Shifter and Vision Pacific. The wood had been donated by Steve Skakle of Windfirm Tree Services. As they say “when it rains, it pours”, the next day, Zander from Howler Contracting invited us to pick up some leftover cedar logs from his latest project in Stonebridge. Shoutouts and thanks to all of you!
Cougar closure!
You might need to adjust your riding plans for the rest of the season as Conservation Officers have closed most of the trails above the Alpine Meadows neighbourhood due to another altercation with an aggressive cougar. Please remember to check Trailforks before heading out and obey all signage at the trailheads.
See you on the trails!
