Trails Update: Apr 29, 2022

It’s strange for a ski town to be done with winter, but Whistler is arguably a mountain bike town now(!) Snow down to the valley did not deter us from getting to the dirt this week. It was actually quite pleasant Wednesday morning until the slush glops began to fall out of the canopy…

AM/PM Changes

We started the season with some new recruits in the Cheakamus zone. There was more work to do on AM/PM. We were relieved to find that last season’s upgrades survived the winter. We made a few more minor changes to address water traps, plus accentuated some berms and jumps. Bogs and brake ruts were armored.

We had to deactivate some of the ride-arounds since they did not merge safely with the main trail lines. From the road, you’ll encounter a “squirrel catcher” feature just left of the main line. Remember: AM/PM is a black rated trail… if the first ride around is a bit much for your ability level, then the rest of the trail will be over your head.

In the upper section (accessed from Business Time- still snowy at time of writing) we sorted out some berms, puddles and replaced the steep slick skinny with a decked bridge. I look forward to getting my tires higher than ever on that slanted boulder…

Shop Talk

Over the Weekend, I went for a ride with my SORCA counterpart David Reid. It was nice to see some of his handy work and bounce work ideas off one another. We spoke about summer plans, crew skill development and the trail crew updates (the blog you’re currently reading). I told him that most of my inspiration comes from creature encounters and my weekly “photo dump”... Later in the ride we stumbled upon an impressive (to me) cluster of Giant Horsetails

“This is the stuff!” I proclaimed.

“Uh?” (confused Dave)

“Content for the trail update!”

An impromptu competitive photoshoot ensued.

Confidently Dave says: “My shot has mountains in the background”

“Haha, mine has Dave Reid in it…”

This stuff just writes itself!

Keep on posting those trailforks reports.

See you on the trails!
