Trails Update: July 16, 2021

Sometimes, a tree falls in the forest...

Starting the week at the top of Yummy Numby, we wanted to address the various braids which have formed there over the years. Traffic now goes both ways into Comfortably Numb and the long wheelbase of modern bikes trying to make that tight right-hand turn have made a mess of the area. The intersection needed to be upgraded.

While collecting rocks to armour some roots, Pat was surprised to be knocked down by a random falling tree!

I know some of you are wondering… yes, it made a noise.

Luckily, it was a small tree... despite its diminutive stature, Pat was pinned! Benoit came to the rescue and all Pat had to show for the tree assault was a scratch.

“It’s just a flesh wound”

Cake will make it all better!

Pat came prepared to celebrate Renee’s birthday: he had spent all night baking a spice cake from scratch. Fairy sprinkles made it festive and gave the crew a nice sugar jolt.

Performing spot repairs is not easy when conditions are bone dry (plus the added burden of lugging fire suppression equipment long distances between projects) so we continued the theme of “improving connectivity” in the lower Sproatt area. First, we gave Rock Rabbit a proper connection to THC, then, we completed the Working Class exit chute ride-around (Pat calls it “Hardly Working”...).

Lord of the Squirrels!

Our inboxes have been filled with queries about condition updates and predicted opening dates for the Sproatt Alpine Network. I haven’t been up there in a few weeks, but the RMOW crew has and they’re calling it: OPEN (as of July 16)!

On the Rocks still has some sizable snow patches so please follow the flagging in order to stay on the trail. Lake temperature is low and mosquito count is high!

Remember that the Sproatt alpine trails are a backcountry environment.

Please be prepared: Info here

In other Alpine trail news: The Peak chair and Top of the World are also opening on July 16!

See you on the trails!
