Trails Update: July 23, 2021

Name tags and hair cuts

I’m probably not the only person surprised by the rain last weekend. It’s like we’ve forgotten it ever happens. I found myself giggling mid-ride: “We might get to do some more productive tasks at work this week!”

Indeed, the chilly showers brought the wildfire risk rating down to MEDIUM for just a day, buying us a short window before the full EXTREME work regulations went back into effect.

We seized the opportunity to trim back as many overgrown trails as we could. In the south, we focused on springtime hits Garbage, Runaway Train, See Colours and Puke and Dirty Beasts. In the north end of town, we cleared Kill Me Thrill Me, North Secret, and Young Lust.

Afternoons were spent installing signposts and removing eye-poking branches by hand. It’s not the most “Instagrammable” trail work but we all appreciate the results.

Nice Ride!

The kind folks at Santa Cruz stepped up their support for the trail crew (again!) by donating another Heckler e-bike to help us get our tools to far-away locations. The timing of new-bike and new-rain was perfect. My inbox has been filled by local shredders nagging me to clear Zanarchy and Gargamel. One of Whistler’s most engaging double black trails, covered in large windfall trees. I sent Pat and Benoit on this expert riding and cutting mission. Both the bikes and electric chainsaw excelled. I suppose the riders fared well too…

Berry Nice

It seems all of the berry varieties are ripening at once this season. I’ve sampled some great Alaskan Blueberries, the usually tart Red Huckleberries are sweet, and there are enough purple Huckleberries to forgo bringing a sandwich. Standouts have been the jammy Thimbleberries and candy grade classic Raspberries. Please try to leave some for the bears!

See you on the trails!
