Trails Update: June 11, 2021

Movin’ up

You could say that I am passionate about efficient logistics. Obsessed maybe. As teenagers, my friends and I stayed up all night playing Risk. In chasing world domination, we followed the “advanced setting” rules: where you could only move your armies across one border per turn. This involved intense planning in order to push a strong front, ready to crush your enemies. This strategy has stayed with me...

I use the same tactic when planning trail crew and tool movement around the valley.

Our current major objective is the “near treeline zone” of Lord of the Squirrels (to upgrade the rooty climb sections). The plan is to gradually move the tools up from the valley bottom, performing repairs along the way. This greatly improves the quality of our commutes (and speed).

As the snow slowly retreats up the mountain, we are keeping our front strong.

All hands and tools started at Beaver Pass and A Cut Above for some buffing, repairs and redesigns.

Next was Green Jello, Cherry on Top and Whipped Cream where we upgraded transitions, drainage and widened climbing segments.

We’re now taking on High Society for some erosion and woodwork repairs.

The Flank is in sight!

Protect your eyes!

It’s amazing how much stuff flies (pun intended) at our eyes at work. Beyond the obvious chainsaw shrapnel and hammering chips, sticks and dirt can ricochet when we dig and tree branches try to stab when we need to venture off trail. Most annoying of all: Black Flies always go for the eyeballs!  I’d like to extend a huge thanks to Ryders Eyewear for again providing the trail crew with anti-fog protective eyewear!

Trail nights still going strong

On top of the Alba Distribution dig night, we got a bonus trail day courtesy of the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC this past Saturday. Your opportunity to dig next week will be supported by Arbutus Routes. New COVID protocols mean we can now handle 30 volunteers per event! Sign up here to help make progress building Flashback!

Meet the crew

The WORCA trail crew has grown in the last few weeks! Benoit, Renee, Liam and I would like to welcome back some familiar faces: Pat, Andreas and Matthias. Plus, a few new additions: Darren and Camie.

You can try to guess who is who in this week’s captionless photos...

See you on the trails!
