Trails Update: June 12, 2020

La mas dulce Vida

We have endeavored a substantial renovation on Pura Vida. The trail has a longstanding reputation as “The easiest trail off of the flank”...

This has not necessarily been good for the trail.

Over the years, tires have skidded holes and exposed roots. Many roots. And, riders desperate for the easiest way down have progressively widened the tread, wider still, wiiiiider still… until new mossy braids appeared. (possibly also due to strava enduro bros)

The trail crew took great care to fill holes, armour roots and enhance some catchments in the original trail alignment. We also blocked braids and tightened the corridor in keeping with the trail’s tight turny vibe.

“DON'T MESS WITH THE CHUTE!” - said the internet

We didn’t.

We choked it (to keep riders IN the chute)

And… We built a ride-around for it. Enjoy a short break from braking if you need it.

The loose fall-line section had “graduated” well into double-black parameters.

Bonus: The split-off can even be used as a jump into the chute if that’s what you’re into.

I gave it a test ride, in the rain and can attest the trail is “Spicy, not Crazy”.

As for the “easiest trail off of the flank” title, that’s now in good hands: Chipmunk Rebellion

Down the rabbit hole

Renee has a keen eye for the unexpected. Over the years, she has found random objects, various bones and even an owl pellet. This week, she found a rabbit’s leg. This made me want to write about how a “Lucky rabbit’s foot” did not bring luck for the rabbit. So I did some research... interesting stuff.

Trail Closures:

Upper Blackcomb trails (Micro Climate, Dark Crystal) are closed until July 1st due to snowmelt and spring bear habitat.

Wedge FSR area trails (Out There, North Secret, Happiest Days) are closed until (at least) June 26 for Logging and IPP Powerline installation.

Remember to check Trailforks for trail status and conditions!

See you on the trails!
