Trails Update: June 19, 2020

Lower LOTS renewal

I have difficulty letting go. When I get an idea, make a plan and don’t quite get it done, it picks at me like an itchy scab: I should ignore it… but it nags and nags. I try to scratch around it, but the obsession doesn't ease until the inevitable.

We took on a hefty renovation of the lower ⅓ of the Squirrels last fall. Getting snowed out before hitting all of the spots has had me pondering the final repairs for the last 6 months: 3 bridges that would help riders keep momentum and tires dry.

Getting to the first viewpoint, we were greeted by the familiar “Arghhhh Arghhh” of juvenile ravens. The higher pitched caw sounds like children screaming at recess.

I played along.

I suspect they were the same family I’ve told you about over the years (“Stolen bag of coffee” 2015 and “Magic show” in 2018).

After some acrobatic soaring, they perched the nearby treetops watching us. The adult birds' deeper caws seemed to convey wisdom to the youth, probably about us. It’s possible they were mocking our bug nets. Did I mention the bugs? The black flies pelting my helmet sounded like rain on a tin roof!

The birds shuffled, getting a good look at us…They seemed happy, and we were happy to share a moment with them. Eventually they lost interest. Or maybe something was lost in translation and I offended them. Perhaps they were disappointed we didn’t have any coffee.

It wasn’t all nature time up there because those bridges had to get done… before the snow melts on Mystic / LESS. Update: That should take another week or so.

Please remember to check a trail’s status before heading out here!

Chipmunk Rebellion is organizing!

With the “urgent” bridge work done up higher, it was time to lose sleep over another big project. With the imminent expansion of the trail crew, we set to flag and prep the upper Chipmunk Rebellion! We’re raising funds to help with this exciting project. Click here to find out how you can help. I’d like to offer a huge shoutout to Edmond Wong for getting the ball rolling on this campaign with a generous offer!

See you on the trails!
