Trails Update: Oct 16, 2020

Signs are up

After the Thanksgiving deluge, Benoit and I went on a rather satisfying mission: installing the signposts at the Chipmunk rebellion. What started as a mystical snow adventure eventually turned sour as the temperature crept up. The wind and rain dropped cold clumps of slush on us. Shivering and out of hot tea, I figured my predicament was no worse than Renee’s: she was in the midst of getting a root canal. Turns out she felt equally concerned for us!

A hefty boulder!

After nearly crashing into it this past weekend, I realized immediate attention was required.

It seems that the granite chunk broke off of an even larger stone uphill from the trail. Knowing that rerouting was a viable “plan B”, we first tried to move the menhir. Armed with some simple machines (levers and pulleys), we set off to play physics. You can watch a timelapse of our process here. No Girlie Man is back to straight forward unobstructed gnar.

Valley bottom upgrades

In trying to work below the snow line, we’ve shifted to the Rebob/Get Over It zone. Renee once again won the nature treasure hunt when she discovered some (I suspect salamander) eggs! We re-buried them in a safe spot.

There will soon be a safer rebob intersection with Westside road and we’ll be replacing some decaying bridges in the coming weeks. We’ll need to close the trails for a few days to replace the longer structures so please check trailforks before your rides.

Drain and report

You remember Rake and report from last spring, right? This fall, you can help by opening blocked drains and reporting downed trees/major issues on trailforks.

When dealing with puddles and drains, a rake can help, but a boot or stick can usually get it done. I tend to kick out some drains every time I get off my bike to check out the amazing fungus! (among us)!

See you on the trails!
