Trails Update: Oct 09, 2020

Reinforcements for the Chipmunk Rebellion!

WORCA was granted permission to extend the Lord of the Squirrels in 2018. Our goal was to provide a much needed alternative to the plentiful westside gnar for exhausted Squirrel riders and intermediates first venturing up to the flank.

With Del Boca Vista in mind, ...oops, this Del Boca Vista as inspiration, I tried to lay out a tight,  low angle trail that would be fun for all levels of rider. Construction began in the spring of 2019 and the lower half was built almost entirely by volunteers! It’s amazing what 40 diggers can do in just a few hours!

This summer, COVID and the now longer commute to higher elevation tasked the WORCA trail crew, assisted by 4 new recruits, to construct the upper section.

We started at the bottom and with the end (start) of the trail in sight, we decided to share the fun by hosting one more volunteer dig day:

Arc’teryx provided the refreshments for the final push (Oct 3) trying to reach Lord of the Squirrels/Into the mystic!

This week, the trail crew tidied it up and smacked the golden spike into another long (!) span. There have been a few lucky “first trackers” who stumbled upon the unmarked entrance and the trail is officially open as of … NOW! (the sign posts will get installed next week).

Squirrels patch-up continues in final (?) blast of summer

We’ve been really lucky with the weather this fall! Working on Lord of the squirrels has been pleasant so we’re still at it. The middle third has seen the least amount of maintenance since the trail opened and its texture has roughened.

I feel extra nostalgic in this zone since this is where we camped during the 3rd year of construction. There are still a few larger projects that we hope to mend before the snow flies, however, we might need to return below the flank after thanksgiving...

See you on the trails!
