Trails Update: June 30, 2023
Volunteer Double header!
We were able to finish the spring Volunteer Trail Dig Night season with 2 events this week! The whole operation moved up to Flashback 1 and focused on finishing work on sections that were started last summer. Monday’s Women’s Dig Night crew worked to the beat of rolling thunder, widening the unfinished trail near See Colors and Puke. Fortunately, the skies proved to be more bark than bite sparing us a downpour. Tuesday’s volunteer crew returned to the swamp crossing. It was a logistical symphony where every piece of material extracted from widening one section was needed to construct and fill the trail in another. Rocks came from the right, dirt from the left all coming together to complete a challenging piece of trail through this ever oozing mountain side. Special thanks go out to Coast Trail Running and Grand Wall Electric for sponsoring these events! Trail nights are on summer hiatus until September so Tuesdays are for bike riding now…
Salted Caramel news
Curious birds, playful squirrels and caterpillars, oh my! Seasonal baby wildlife viewing has been great lately. It is rewarding to slow down and pay attention. Last week’s rain gave us the opportunity to perform some ground work on this highly anticipated dessert topping. The crew laid down some beautiful rockwork and foundations for the last bridge are taking shape.

“It must be ready! Top of the World is open…”
Sadly not until mid July given the persistent snowpack… The photo included in this report is from June 25th. The south facing meadows (1600m) on Into the Mystic were still covered by a meter of snow. Sproatt gets way more precipitation than Whistler mountain and steeper South facing slopes around Top of the World melt out faster than the flatter terrain near the summit of Sproatt. The RMOW rangers are up there and will be updating trailforks as parts of the network are ready to open. Get your legs ready for the alpine by pedaling up blackcomb or to Cheakamus lake. Please be patient!
See you on the trails!
